Eyeing North Korea, Donald Trump holds on to bargaining chip with China

US president marks 100 days in office with rally, saying now is not the time to brand Beijing a currency manipulator as they deal with North Korea

US President Donald Trump is holding on to his threat to label China as a currency manipulator as a bargaining chip to deal with North Korea, analysts say, even though Beijing may not play ball.

Going back to his core support base in a campaign-style rally in Pennsylvania to mark his first 100 days in the White House, Trump said now was “not exactly the right time” to confront Beijing when President Xi Jinping (習近平) was helping him rein in North Korea’s aggressive pursuit of ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

If the U.S. considers North Korea to be a threat to us, we need to be prepared to act independently, irrespective of China. I assume we are. The DoD has people who do this stuff.

Some countries U.S. went to war against are enemies with a question mark. In contrast, N. Korea is an unmistakable enemy who openly vows to destroy U.S. with nuclear weapons, and they made a lot of progress on their nuclear arsenal. The country can no longer be dismissed as a lunatic clown.

I agree. I think it’s an open question whether North Korea can launch a nuclear missile - their tests have been less than impressive. However, there’s no question of their hostility.

The author is behind the times in their facts......China has already stopped manipulating their currency......of course because of Trump.....that’s not to say they won’t begin again once the N.Korea issue is settled.....but they already stopped doing so during the election when Trump hammered China about it!

From the bit of intel about NoKo, we would have to sacrifice one million souls in Seoul. It would also sacrifice the SoKo economy. It’s either the Lusitania or the Berlin Wall.
Or we can just continue on the same path. Not any good answers here.
