I've done some traveling in SA both before and after majority rule and have spoken at length to a number of South Africans. As a result I'm tempted to think I might know a tiny bit about the country...perhaps a bit more than the typical Westerner.

IMO South Africa should have been divided into at least two countries, one (and only one) for the whites and at least one (or more if the people demanded it) for blacks. On dividing it great care would be taken to ensure that resources were fairly divided (farm land, ports, minerals, etc).

Knowing something about their history and about the lives they lead it's easy for me to see why the whites wouldn't want to be ruled by blacks. And it's every bit as easy for me to see why the blacks wouldn't want to be rules by the whites...at least not in the way they had been in the past.

From what I've seen of it South Africa is a breathtakingly beautiful country. It would be a damn shame if it were to become another Zimbabwe.

Too late for SA. They HAD their Civil War there and the white folks lost. Just consequences ever since.

The problem is this--the 4-5 million white SOuth Africans, if allowed separation, will build, in no time, a thriving 1st world society. As they did during apartheid. It was among the highest, if not the highest standard of living in the world. First heart transplant surgery, etc.

The blacks will demand to be allowed in to work because they won't build anything. They will live on the ruins of what's left functioning in South Africa.

We know the rest of the story.
