Somewhat irrelevant, but the British used to name their major warships with monikers like the Revenge, the Resolution, the Indomitable, Victory, Dreadnot, Defiance, etc.
We get names like Carl Vinson.
I’m sure Carl Vinson was a very fine man and a patriot; but would my esprit de corps be raised if I could serve on a ship named the Revenge?

United States ship naming conventions for the U.S. Navy were established by Congressional action since at least 1862. Title Thirteen, Chapter Six of the US Code enacted that year reads in part, "The vessels of the Navy shall be named by the Secretary of the Navy under direction of the President according to the following rule: "Sailing-vessels of the first class shall be named after the States of the Union, those of the second class after the rivers, those of the third class after the principal cities and towns and those of the fourth class as the President may direct." Section 1531 Since that time, the US warship naming conventions have gotten, let's say, complicated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_ship_naming_conventions

You have quite the point there. Think about having ships like the USS Ass-Kicker, or the USS Can-o-Whoop Ass. You DO have to Americanized the names s bit, you know. :>)

An aircraft carrier wasn’t named for him for no good reason. Study up on the man and you’ll see it is well deserved.
