Somewhat irrelevant, but the British used to name their major warships with monikers like the Revenge, the Resolution, the Indomitable, Victory, Dreadnot, Defiance, etc.

We get names like Carl Vinson.

I’m sure Carl Vinson was a very fine man and a patriot; but would my esprit de corps be raised if I could serve on a ship named the Revenge?

United States ship naming conventions for the U.S. Navy were established by Congressional action since at least 1862. You have quite the point there. Think about having ships like the USS Ass-Kicker, or the USS Can-o-Whoop Ass. You DO have to Americanized the names s bit, you know. :>)

An aircraft carrier wasn’t named for him for no good reason. Study up on the man and you’ll see it is well deserved.
