The Constitution says it can’t be cruel and unusual. Doesn’t proscribe painless and suffering-free.

in context, “cruel and unusual” was more of a prohibition against punishment that was way over-the-top for the crime committed. AKA - chopping off hands for a common thief. Basically - means of torture were not considered appropriate.

But they never envisioned a pain-free exit as the requirement.
