That's the whole idea. It is why we have The Rules of the Nautical Road.

That doesn't mean that it is always done. There are great pressures on merchant captains to stay on schedule.

Heaven help the US Naval Officer, Captain or otherwise, who fails in this regard.

Without more information it is impossible to know who is at fault here. That area likely sees fairly high traffic but is probably not considered restricted waters. The sea of Marmara between the Bosporus and the Dardanelles is a high traffic area with restricted maneuverability. The pucker factor would be very high.

They should have read How To Avoid Huge Ships. For those that have not seen this, the comments are hilarious.

Yes sir. Surface Warfare Officer turned Intelligence.

I used to claim that I could drive anything from a unicycle to an aircraft carrier. Now a days I would be likely to hurt myself on a unicycle. My ship driving is rusty but I could probably do it without bending too much metal.

Captains hate it when you scratch the paint. They really get bent out of shape if you bend their ships out of shape. They're signed out for those things and there is no collision insurance.

The big thing to remember about collisions at sea, other than they will ruin your whole day, is that the Law of Gross Tonnage applies. That is, the ship with the greater gross tonnage wins.

I think it was a British MI6 operation. This happened to a British spy ship back in the 1970’s according to a documentary I saw called “For Your Eyes Only”.....

I’m sorry. I guess I’m just used to people assuming that I’m retired.

I did come back. Retired in 99.
