Thanks for the ping. The guy had an emergency, but it was a non-threatening one. It called to mind a passage from the United CEO’s carefully crafted letter, ‘What Went Wrong?’:

‘It happened because our corporate policies were placed ahead of our shared values. Our procedures got in the way of our employees doing what they know is right.’

In this case, would a modicum of patience and circumspection have harmed Delta? Would it have benefited the passenger? There are the rigid rules, and then there’s common sense.

Exactly. The poor guy was probably doubled-over and praying for takeoff and the seatbelt sign to go off.
The new breed of bootlicking-respect-my-authoritah FReepers seemingly cannot grasp the notion of somebody honestly needing to race to the lavatory.

I was on a United flight about a year ago and my darn seat was broken. The seat back was totally reclined. When I advised the flight crew, they told me that I would be fine for takeoff and landing.
One wonders if the mirrored-sunglasses-do-as-I-say faction here would support me if I asked for that aircraft to return to the jetway for replacement...for my safety, of course?
