I don't think it's Obama bringing it up.

It sounds like it's a writer interpreting a letter Obama wrote 30 years ago in light of conversations with people who knew Obama in those days.

“It's his way of coming out of the closet.” That is my take on this as well. Maybe more evidence of the Obama double life is about to surface and this publicity, at this time, is paving the way for democrats to come up with a positive response as to why the public was lied to all of these years. Of course, this admission also leads to more of the truth about Obama, his US citizen status and academic records etc.
