We lost this battle the moment we started talking about “gender” rather than “sex”. There are two sexes: male and female. Gender is a concept of grammar.
I keep saying that, but for some reason a lot of people (even here) don't like to use the word "sex" anymore, as if it were dirty or something. Beaten down by the PC brigades...
