We’re looking at a possible government shutdown next Saturday, and that’s got some conservatives nervous. They shouldn’t be. Admittedly, past government shutdowns — or threats of shutdowns — have worked against conservatives. With Trump, however, it would likely be a different story....
even a partial shutdown plays precisely into the Trump agenda and his campaign promises of draining the swamp. Trump’s base, as well as “swing voters” who are fed up with out of control spending, would, of course, be cheered by such a move. Moreover, such a shutdown plays into Trump’s hands by giving him every excuse to slash funding to “sanctuary cities,” to bloated university programs, to global warming science grants, and on and on. Social Security checks will continue, the military will be funded, and necessary services will hum along while grants to study the sex life of the fruit bat will not. Deep State bureaucrats who so depend on the federal government for their very existence would be the ones most hurt. In short, Trump can not only make even a partial shutdown look like the Democrats’ fault but shield many of the (normally) loudest voices from the pain.
More important, every minute the bloated government is shut down reinforces the perception of Trump as a businessman who cuts the fat, extracts more efficiency, and makes the U.S. government more like a business. Unlike the Clinton/Gingrich shutdown battle, the control over what sectors of the government get their money is in the hands of a Republican president, not a Democrat who held up funds on the most visible and sympathetic programs. Trump would relish starving all the non-essential offices like PBS and NPR or global-warming science grants.

Interesting take on the possibility of a shutdown. I hadn’t thought of it that way, but the author makes sense. Trump would seize the shutdown as an opportunity to cut more crap.

Once you get up to thirty days of limited government services, and a lot of civil service in the DC area will start to get worried. I think by week six....a lot of Democrats will ask to return to the topic of fixing this, and find that Trump wants 10-percent (minimum) of the workers to be permanently erased from the DC work establishment. By week eight...it’ll finally end. If I were a GS in DC....I’d put my house up for sale right now and prepare for the worst.
The democrats still don’t get why they lost the election.
It’s awesome watching Trump lead them straight into a trap. They really have no clue.
Unlike the Obama shutdown, there will not be guards at the National Monuments scaring people away.
That alone is worth the price.
Obama had to mobilize more federal employees to police their “shutdown” at parks and landmarks than are used for normal day-to-day operations.
Knowing what is right and Doing what is right is always difficult for Congress. Personally, I believe similarly as Samuel Clemons regarding Congress. Let it be said Mr Ron White maybe the American People sometimes can fix stupid. One of the best lines ever Mr. White. My belief is the American People took your “you can’t fix stupid” as a personal challenge and decided to do as Americans have always done. Thanks Mr.White. You are more than a comedian.

I’ve said a few times that one measure of Trump’s success will be housing prices in the D.C. suburbs. If he manages to keep them level for a few years from their current overinflated values, that would be a success. If he manages to reduce them through his actions cutting Federal programs and bureaucracy, that would be success beyond my wildest dreams.
Works for me.
Obama may have done that in the more prominent areas, but in backwater areas, he did no such thing.
Despite my status as an essential government employee, I was allowed to go on leave during the government shutdown (while all of the non-essential employees were not at work). We went on vacation to a resort near a national park. It was a small national park. The concessions and bathrooms were locked up, but we were able to walk through the park just fine.
The only reason Obama ordered the parks and museums closed was for the imagery: he wanted to use that to prove to people just how indispensable a bloated and growing government is. Those of us who are intelligent know that the parks and museums have plenty of revenue that comes from customers, not taxes, and that the bloating cannot continue. There are places to cut that don't impact people's ability to visit parks and museums.
