An American paramedic working for European security watchdog OSCE's monitoring mission in eastern Ukraine was killed and two others were injured on Sunday when their vehicle struck a mine, triggering a U.S. call for a transparent, timely investigation.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said the killing was the first death of one of its members while on patrol in Ukraine, where more than 700 international observers help report on a simmering conflict that has deeply strained relations between Russia and the West.

The Ukrainian military said the blast took place at 10:17 local time (0317 ET) near the small village of Pryshyb, which is controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

The OSCE said in addition to the death, two of its monitors were taken to the hospital.

An Austrian foreign ministry spokesman said a German woman was injured. Austria holds the rotating presidency of the OSCE.

Somebody send this to the White House communications office.

Would be interesting to see if the President says something about this act of terrorism.

What is this world coming to? When you can’t drive around on roads in a war zone on the eastern front without hitting a land mine?

Landmines are so good in the defense. But god they suck for decades after. The guy who laid it gets killed, a map gets destroyed, and it vanishes down the memory hole and lays there for a 3 or 4 decades. Cambodia is lousy with them to this day. Also the middle east.

Too bad.

If the land mine was on a road, it would seem that it had not been there all that long.
