Border clashes near Vladivostok and Mongolia in late ‘30s between Japanese and Soviets. Ended in ‘39 with Zhukov at Nomanhan (Khalkin Gol). Caused the Japanese to look south and freed up troops for defense of Moscow in late ‘41. Then in ‘45 Soviets launched their Manchurian campaign.
