Potassium chlorate was old-school primer compound...the corrosive stuff that made it necessary to wash out the barrel and working parts with hot soapy water or face aggressive rusting in a short time.

I used to make black powder with charcoal (carbon powder), potassium nitrate and sulfur. Made some great noisemakers......
