Design flaws, construction shortcomings and maintenance errors caused the Oroville Dam spillway to break apart in February, according to an independent analysis by Robert Bea for the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management at UC Berkeley.

Since the failure, state and federal officials have taken inspection reports and design documents offline and refused public information requests for their disclosure.

Go figure. These bureaucrats don't want to jeopardize their cushy jobs and outrageous pensions.

“Design flaws, construction shortcomings and maintenance errors caused the Oroville Dam spillway to break apart in February, according to an independent analysis by Robert Bea for the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management at UC Berkeley.”

I think I could have come to that conclusion in 5 minutes.

Governors have priorities, and by all appearances, the inspection and maintenance of the tallest dam in the U.S. was not one of them for Mister Moonbeam.

There were some excellent discussions here on FR at the time. Most of what he said is just a replay.

We have some experienced engineers on board FR.

Brown can’t maintain a dam but he is going to solve global warming.

Whatever happens, let’s hope it’s kept inside California. Other states should back off

Yes, Edmud G. (Pat) Brown ( Jerry the Fairy’s Father) was governor then. Ole Pat was a “builder” when he was in office. The State Highway Dept. was called “The Highway Gang” under Brown. The freeways that fell down during the Loma Prieta Earthquake went up while he was in office.

I’ve not looked at it in a while. And I was on the East Coast for a week, with travel it is almost 2 weeks I was gone.

It was much longer than that when I last saw the discussions.

Yeah, no kidding. Great twenty twenty hindsight there. Where was the U C Berkley risk management before. They’re already over $100,000,000 dollars in and haven’t gotten the dredging of spoiled material half way completed yet. Well over a billion dollar restoration/repair bill, all for a lousy $20,000,000 deferred maintenance project.

Gotta pay for all that illegal alien healthcare and higher education, oh and don’t forget going nowhere at high speed, Yeah, and about that $20 billion in water bonds, we had to divert that to the smelt and our pockets. So now let’s get Uncle Sugar to come bail our a$$es out.

More exactly, Brown would rather spend our state tax dollars on supporting ILLEGAL VOTES than on doing jobs like the Oroville spillway correctly. Decades have proven that political power to DemocRATS is far more important than water....

My first thought was another group of engineers throwing the guys charged with building and keeping their crap functional under the bus.

“And?...”

it appears that the stuff built during his administration was not built to reasonable engineering standards. In addition to the “thin” spillway concrete with too little steel reinforcement, there was also a technical recommendation to put “turbulators” on the surface of the spillway to reduce the uplift caused by the rushing water that was never implemented. That was on Jerry The Fairy’s watch. No wonder they’re trying to prevent the public from seeing any of the damning documentation. California is really the worse for wear thanks to 24 years of the Browns coupled with a term and a half from Gray Davis who was Jerry’s chief of staff (who was recalled). Ronald Reagan’s two terms were really the only “real” Republican leadership. Aahnold, Pete Wilson, Deukmejian etc. were all worthless RINO turds. But it could have been worse, Jerry’s sister Kathleen ran for governor and lost, but she was AG for quite a while.
