Good free PR to bump people up a class when you got otherwise empty seats.

Who is going to pay the extra for the premium seat if they are big enough to take it on their own and hold it against other contenders.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. The situation in question involves empty seats. The airline was within it’s rights to wake up the sleeping guy and ask the passengers to take their assigned seats. The only real question here is if United wants good or bad PR.
