A Temple Hills man who shot two Prince George's County firefighters when they entered his home last year has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Darrell Lumpkin apologized in court Friday telling the judge he was very sorry. He claimed he was having a diabetic episode and thought someone was breaking into his home when he opened fire.

I have mentioned this on FR before: If police (or firefighters) need to break into a house, they should be required to turn on their vehicle sirens and roof lights the instant they entire.
Let those inside know just who's outside.
Aren't a fire truck's lights and siren on the entire route to the house?
Good suggestion, but some wackos would still do stupid things. The advantage is you wake the whole neighborhood, and you have lots of witnesses, and maybe people that could reason with the guy.

I’m guessing the firemen wouldn’t use their lights and sirens on a welfare check. Which this situation was.
And I’m guessing the police wouldn’t use their lights and sirens when responding to, say, reports of a prowler.
What I’m suggesting here is this: lights and sirens on the way (or not), use them the instant you break through a person’s front door.
That last word in my post #1 should be “enter”, not “entire”. If this keeps up, I’m going to sue whoever invented spellcheck.

I’ve had a diabetic episode some 14 years ago and, based on my experience, this guy might be innocent of any intent. I know diabetics need to be careful of low blood sugar and recognize symptoms. However, I have never had any recall of what I did and said. Apparently I started screaming at my desk and then ran down the hallway until I got confused and couldn’t unlock the door. Fortunately the people working with me knew I was an insulin dependent diabetic and took proper measured.

This was a case of them thinking it was a medical emergency only. They had no thought that the guy might be dangerous.
His brother was with the firefighters and he got shot also.
Since, they have changed their operational response to these type of calls.
This guy was not found guilty of intent or manslaughter. He had a felony record from many years ago, purchased his weapon legally in 2001, but in 2012 the gun law was changed so he was sentenced for illegally owning a weapon.
IMO, that is way too late. General thumb I've heard is that at the point an intruder breaks in the door and starts to enter, they can be shot.
That sucks.
