My emotions may be analog, but my understanding tends to be digital, either yes or no, right or wrong, etc., and it's taken me a while to understand the many shades of gray and grey in our world.

Since first discovering Free Republic, I've learned a bit about "normalcy bias" first hand as it applies to our political and social realities and the truths that can NEVER be told, but I couldn't make much sense of it.

Fortunately, the movie Men In Black came along about the same time with an explanation.

Obviously, Agents J and K are talking about alien life not of Earth, but I've ran into the same sort of thing talking politics with progressive true believers who get all of their info from the media echo chamber.

Here are two examples that helped me. The first:

Kay: Humans, for the most part, don't have a clue. Don't want one.
They're happy. They think they have a good bead on things.
Edwards: Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it.
Kay: A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.

And the second:

Kay: We do not discharge our weapons in view of the public!
Jay: Man, we ain't got time for this cover-up bullshit! I don't know whether or not you've forgotten, but there's an Arquillian Battle Cruiser that's about to...
Kay: There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

That last part seems to hit the nail squarely on the head.

Trump has his work cut out for him and he won't be getting much help from either party and about half of the US population.
