Are we seeing the politics of personal destruction aimed at private citizens, now?
United was in the wrong, here. Regardless of the character of their chosen victim.
...
Legally, United is on solid ground. From a PR standpoint they are in a bit of a hole, mostly because people are emotional and irrational.
The story I read is that the people were asked to leave because some United employees wanted the seats. Not overbooking , more like they were bumped from a military hop scenario. But I digress
Rhapsody in Black and Blue.
Probable Cause, Illegal Search and Seizure.
Even if he was the most evil man in the USA, you still need a Warrant to arrest and detain someone who is a USA citizen.
...
So if someone is in your house that you don’t want to be there, you can’t call the police to remove them?
Nothing.
So what?
What am I to take form this, United Airlines hates gays?
Okay.
The man’s background has f*** all to do with the thugs beating him up and dragging him off the plane AFTER he had boarded it.
I’m pretty sure that I saw an article yesterday saying that he initially walked off the plane.
After the physical confrontation, they pulled him down the aisle.
They should have waited until they were at 30,000' before they threw him off the plane.
He has a HUGE lawsuit, regardless of his past actions. My view, United had no legal right to remove anyone from that flight because of its mistake in overbooking. The only legitimate thing they could do is continuing upping the payoff until they got 4 takers. They were offering $800 and a hotel. They needed to keep going, whether it took $10,000. At some point they would have gotten volunteers. But what they can’t do is grab someone who wants to go home that day and forcibly remove them. Now it will cost them a lot more than what they were offering.
Pretty impressive move by UA. Drag a paying customer off of a plane, and then commit character assassination on said person when they speak out.
Treating your customers like shit while taking their money is a poor business model to say the least.
Of course, the uber business FR cheerleaders won’t see it that way.
How about we repo the toyota you bought because a couple of toyota employees really need a ride to work.
The current business sales paradigm of treating your customers like shit, threatening them, and breaking contracts at the first sign of inconvenience is going to come back,to bite them in the ass.
He flew from Chicago to Louisville for work?
That’s about 300 miles
I’d drive that
Agreed. I also am curious about whether United had anything to do with this story.
Seriously
Probably a grade B foreign med school sort
That is one of the issues, and I agree with you on that one.
United’s business is to transport passengers, not employees.
I’ve been around a lot of pilots.
They are very particular about how long they can work.
Look up “crew rest” and you will find out how serious they are about this.
They can only work certain hours and so many hours. This might have been an issue.
It’s mostly a safety issue, but it also comes down to the fact that pilots are Captains of the plane and they are in charge. Some of them get arrogant.
If these were just ticket agents taking a ride, then all bets are off.
And like I wrote, airlines treat people like cattle.
Interesting, but completely irrelevant to the United matter.
So - it sounds like UAL lawyers are already planning the court venue and winnowing out the jury pool.
Seems they really don’t want the good Dr. owning their airline.
How would the venue selection go right now? Would his attorney be looking for precincts with lots of Asian doctors? Would this be confined to Chicago?
For those that dont travel much let me fill you in so you may understand what the media is doing.
1) United or any airline for that matter will never give you cash period. What they give you is a voucher that typically is only good for one year.
2) This Voucher is for the book value of a future flight, not the fair market value of that flight. For example, while every else can book the same flight online for $250, the book value is probably around $1000. Since you have a Voucher for $800 you still must pay $200 for that flight. You save $50.
3) United did not up the offer for something that had real value. Experienced travelers know this and will not take the deal.
4) The Ramp Manager for reasons I can only speculate about did not sweeten the deal and went into full dictator mode. This is very typical behavior for some airlines and varies by airport. In this case Chicago OHare and United are the worst of both.
5) Ramp Managers have a great deal of power and a good one can fix things that constantly surprise me. This one showed gross poor judgement and once the passenger said no they should have re-run the lottery. This one went in to Lord of the Ramp mode and bought in the muscle.
6) So far, this Ramp Manager has cost United $650 million.
7) With all of the above If I can take a later flight, preferably one in the next morning I will always do so to avoid a crowed flight.
8) Because I have been stuck in too many airports I travel light, one knapsack.
9) To those who travel only for leisure have no idea much we detest getting on a plane. A quick getaway is a form of torture.
If United was behind this second attack on their victim then I won’t be >quietly< boycotting them anymore.
