Just wanted to add that this would be in the context of the so-called “multi-speed Europe” they’ve been talking about for over a decade now; the stronger countries forming a “hard core” and the weaker ones as clients/vassals.

Failure to thrive syndrome is I think the result of seventy years of creeping socialism. Serfdom has the same effect. But I also think there are still some natives who would thrive, given a fair chance. The will seems stronger in some places, such as Poland and Hungary, and a tiny monority here in Britain.
