In historic moment, Neil Gorsuch sworn in as Supreme Court justice

Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s pick to the fill the Supreme Court slot left open after the unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia, was sworn in this morning, becoming the 113th person to serve on the Supreme Court.

Gorsuch's confirmation is a victory for President Trump, who has struggled to achieve his campaign promises of a travel ban and health care reform.

"I can say this is a great honor. And I got it done in the first 100 days. That's even nice. You think that's easy," Trump said of Gorsuch's nomination, speaking at a public ceremony from the White House today.

Gorusch, 49, now fills the seat left vacant by the death of conservative Scalia, and the court is back to its previous balance: four conservative, four liberals and Kennedy as the swing vote.

"To my new colleagues and the staff of the Supreme Court, thank you for the very warm welcome. I look forward to many happy years together," Gorsuch said from the Rose Garden with Trump beaming behind him.

There aren’t that many of them, so the list is relatively short from the beginning of the republic until now.

And, of course, there are the issues of Scalia’s death, so that’s a bit different than normal.

Then the issue of McConnell refusing the nominee of Obama.

And finally, I think he’s the first new scotus judge to be filibustered.

That’s all a bit different than the norm....so historic fits.

When that happens, keep them away from windows in tall buildings and sharp objects.

Why? I'll be handing out scissors to every democrat in town. :-)

“””””What is with this “balence” crap? I’m afraid we are going to here all about how Trump needs to replace SC justices with like justices. The President can nominate anyone he wants, screw the “balence” of the court!”””””

Exactly. I thought the job of a judge was to simply follow the law. I did not know there was a conservative law and a liberal law.

I pray he is good.

Same. A new Justice is always a dice roll to some extent. It’s unlikely he will be another Scalia or Thomas, but he will probably raise the current average by a noticeable margin.

““Historic” how?”

If you pick up a real American History book you will find that each time a member of the USSC is selected, resigns or dies it is always noted as a historic event.

Add to that this man replaced Justice Scalia, an amazing man who held the line against the progressive unconstitutional BS unforgivingly + he was appointed by a non-politician named President Trump & you have a historic moment.

Let’s pray he’s not a Trojan Horse. Don’t count on him for social issues. No way a social conservative stays in that church. On matters of law I think we will be fine although
I am concerned he may buy into the AGW BS. What we do know is if the witch had won the rats would have a solid 5-4 so there is that.

Robertson swore him in privately this morning. Kennedy did the public swearing in because Gorsuch used to clerk for him.

Cynic that I am, I think most people who take such an oath promptly forget and violate it. They always look appropriately solemn, but it’s all for show, I think. So what’s the over-under on when Gorsuch betrays us? Leftwing judges never betray their side, but supposedly conservative ones frequently do.

Roberts administered the standard Oath of Office at 9:00 in a private ceremony. Kennedy administered a second oath, the “Judges Oath”, separate and distinct from the regular oath of office.

Someone must be asleep at the switch at ABC. If Justice Goresuch were a one legged lesbian tranny troll it would be “historic”. Since he is a conservative Christian it is a “grave and frightening moment for women and minorities”.
