Here is a crazy idea I have never heard anyone mention.
Would China be a more comfortable neighbor to South Korea than North Korea has been ?
What would we — or S. Korea, Japan, Philippines, etc. — lose if we encouraged China to annex North Korea and dismantle the cult that is the NK regime ? Especially if they gave up all claims to Taiwan, the South China Sea and those Islands in exchange for our not objecting to the annexation.

Somewhere in between - China wants domination. If they take NK the SK is next. SK is already in the crosshairs of the Xi government.
China getting more stuff is not good news. It will lead to other things.

They've got problems with regions like Tibet that are ethnically apart (though less so today).

Not a crazy idea at all. In this day and age economic growth and prosperity is the order of the day. N Korea is a hindrance to that process. Full bellies and freedom for all.
