Rickles was still going strong in June 2012 when, during the American Film Institutes tribute to actress Shirley MacLaine, he joked that he shouldnt make fun of the blacks. President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke.
Exactly! Many famous comedians of the past were good friends privately. One has to know who your competition is, or what the Pecking Order is.
With a friend, you can be a little bit extra brutal, knowing they can zing you too ,in short order.
Love this guy!! The famous would travel great distances in the hopes they would become the target of his acid dipped barbs at one of his shows.
Being ravaged, ridiculed and demeaned wAs considered an honor back in the day.
You’d have enjoyed the time a guy I knew who had a booming voice and an extremely quick wit, went to Vegas, took in a Rickles show, got picked on and gave Rickles as good as he got. Later, in the casino, people congratulated this guy on what they assumed was a scripted show. My friend didn’t throw Rickles but Rickles didn’t throw my friend.
“Eddie Fisher married to Elizabeth Taylor is like me trying to wash the Empire State Building with a bar of soap”
RIP. He was one very funny fellow.
Well yet another Icon from my youth gone. He was funny and original, not mention a pretty good actor. I think I first saw him in the movie “Run Silent, Run Deep” great war movie with Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable.
One of all time favorites was his role as Crapgame in “Kelley’s Heroes”, his line in that was classic,”Make A DEAL, deal! Maybe the guy’s a Republican. “Business is business,” right?”
The real end of an Era. God Speed Don and thanks for the great memories.
RIP Don.
I saw a special on him recently “Mr Warmth”. And it interviewed Bob Newhart. If I recall correctly Bob and his wife had dinner with Rickles and she was commenting how nice he was. And Bob said, “Uh, you know, he’s not like that in his show.” And then they went to the show and Rickles pulls that out.
ROFLMAO.
Sad to hear. Rickles was never one of my favorite comedians, but I definitely appreciated his non-PC dialogue. Won’t see much of that coming from white male comedians these days. Most are fully neutered.
Rickles once said of Sinatra, "When you enter a room, you have to kiss his ring. I don't mind, but he has it in his back pocket."
I just kid you sir, that’s a lovely hairpiece. Not everyday you run across one made out of Berber.
RIP Don.
He will be missed.
God Bless, and RIP Mr. Rickles. Thanks for the many laughs over the years, you hockey puck!!
“From KELLYS HEROES
make him a deal
what kind of a deal?
you know, a deal deal...”
...maybe he’s a republican.”
Lol
Triumph is exactly how I have described Don Rickles to a family member who didn’t know him.
Classic stuff.
After sitting in the front row of comedy acts i learned my lesson and sat further back.
The next show, Carson's back, "notices" the broken case, and storms, camera in tow, across to the adjoining soundstage taping "CPO Sharkey" to confront Rickles.
I'm sure Carson planned it, including having an unaware Rickles be in the middle of a scene/rehearsal around that time, but Rickles seemed genuinely shocked to have the set crashed at that point.
I saw that show, classic live TV entertainment!
The last of the great comedians IMO.
Don Rickles appeared in so many television shows over the years and was absolutely hilarious on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
It’s so sad just knowing he won’t be around anymore.
Thanks for the laughs, Don.
