Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told the Senate on Wednesday morning that he doesn't expect construction of a wall the full length of the U.S.-Mexico border -- marking the abandonment of a central campaign promise by President Donald Trump.
"It's unlikely that we will build wall or a physical barrier from sea to shining sea," Kelly testified to the Senate Homeland Security Committee. "We're not going to build a wall where it doesn't make sense. But we'll do something across the Southwest border."
That's a direct contradiction of Trump's vow of a "big, beautiful wall" the full 2,200-mile length of the Southwest border. Trump has not personally indicated a willingness to abandon that promise, a cornerstone of his appeal to voters.
There are about 650 miles of fencing along the border, mostly in urban areas of California and Texas. Kelly has been seeking input from Customs and Border Protection officers. A typical response, he told senators, is: "Boss, if you could give me 27 more miles here, 16 miles here, I don't really care about the other 140 miles I'm responsible for."
Such "strategic fencing," he said, would deflect drug and immigrant smugglers away from cities, making them easier to catch.
"The barriers work. Technology also works," he said.
Democrats on the panel welcomed the about-face but sought reassurance that Trump himself is on board, and willing to abandon a promise not only to build a full-length wall and -- implausibly -- to make Mexico pay for it. Security experts call a full-length barrier wasteful and unnecessary, given the terrain along the 2,200-mile border. Texas officials in both parties reject the idea. Mexican leaders call Trump's demands offensive.

We will see. Build where can and deport. It’s working.
Build a maze.
“marking the abandonment of a central campaign promise by President Donald Trump”
BS. Trump never used this sea to shining sea expression.
Many spots have natural barriers.
I understand that. There are certain areas where is mostly water, and there is not much solid land to fasten the posts to. There are certain areas where an actual wall would move onto privately owned land. There are areas where I hope they do not have an opaque wall. I hope they consider a see through fence of some type, so we can remain aware at all times what the other side is up to.
NO!!
Build the wall. The entire wall. Every single foot of the way from the Atlantic, to the Pacific.
Built it. All of it.
I have been for Trump since before he even announced his candidacy, but BUILD THE WALL.
Every darned foot.
No, it does not.
This IS more spew from the Dallas moaning news.
.
I have always said, the wall (or triple fence) would be built from El Paso to San Diego.
No, Trump said he’d build the wall where it made sense given the nature of the terrain.
Likely we don’t need an unbroken wall. Just more wall st crucial points then drones etc along the rest.
“Mexican leaders call Trump’s demands offensive.”
For Trump not wanting their illiterate and unskilled and criminals?
Most intelligent and objective people understood that the wall would not be built on rivers or thankless barren deserts.
President Trump is building a physical wall where it is needed and practical.
Most people get the metaphor. The Dallas Morning News seems more obtuse than usual on this topic.
Part of the wall will be sensor systems, and radar with drone support.
TWB
There was NEVER promise to build a wall along the ENTIRE border. More FAKE NEWS from the so-called Mainstream Media.
I’m using this article with my homeschooled 6th grader. We’re playing spot the fallacies and bias.
Trump has said the exact same thing throughout his Campaign.
You don’t build a Wall where Natural Barriers exist.
Does anyone even know what a Cost / Benefit Analysis is?
The Media keeps trying to undermine President Trump’s Base with lies, innuendo and purposeful ignorance.
He needs to talk to his boss then. The President has other ideas.
Oh yeah, Tagline...
Here is my take. We don’t have the money for the long long wall. Will never get it from Congress either. There sections with a strong natural border. There are sections that 80%+ of Illegals come in from. Build that section and secure that. Have a visible construction project. Trump can drive a bulldozer. I would be satisfied with that. Where is the big section of bleeding. Start there. Get a few budget dollars here and there. Tax money wire transfers. Start a Go Fund Me page. I’d kick in $100.
Where is that section I see on Fox news file footage with the same kid climbing the fence. Build the Wall there for a 100 miles.
<< Mexican leaders call Trumps demands offensive. >>
Not a problem. Make Mexico a free-fire zone.
Wait, it already is. That’s why we want the wall.
I was thinking of something a little more formidable ... and more dangerous for trespassers.
