For decades Barry Manilow gave the world timeless hits, while keeping his own world a total secret. Now at 73 years old, the music legend is opening up about his life, struggles and, for the first time, his sexuality.

meh...
“”Ironically, he did not write, I Write the Songs.””
Correction...I did not know that and I said “50 years” when he only became known in the ‘70’s...I don’t care. I enjoy his singing so much, it seems like 50 years. It doesn’t make any sense to me to denigrate a great talent because of someone’s sexual whatever!!!
Another poster was right - his music is enjoyed by older female Republicans.....
Classic pattern: raised by a domineering mother who alienated dad
Manilow Gay!?! Shocking. Liberace still dead.
Can’t say I appreciate your choice of language....
And President Reagan and Nancy were good friends of Liberace, and of course, they knew about him.
you should have clarified “male fans”
Kudos to Manilow for not flaunting his gayness. Smart career decision too until now. I wish more gays would just shut up about it and take it quietly to their bedrooms and not to the streets.
I think that pretty much goes for any fans of male singers. I mean where are male Justin Bieber fans?
His bank account begs to differ. Remember too he played at Rush's wedding. Dont care much for his 'gayness' sin but man was he a talent with a trove of hit songs.
Up to that point, Elton was the biggest recording artist on the planet. After that the hits dried up, and it probably took about ten years before he started having hits again.
Exactly. Actually, I have a certain amount of respect for him, in that he kept his sexuality apart from his entertainment. Obviously he respected the entirety of his fans/audience to care that some would be disappointed. Good on Barry Manilow.
I frankly do not care what you do in privacy of your abode.
Just found the whole notion of Barry thinking he was hiding something from his fan base amusing.
Back then and now- judge people on their character, not their melanin count or their sexual orientation.
I wish he’d had kept his sexual problems to himself.
Wow, no surprise there.
I have never liked his music, ever.
You’re right about EJ and it also happens to many other recording artists. Michael Jackson was a hit machine and then he fizzled out too. Even the Rolling Stones decades in longevity yet they dont thrive on new material but past glories regarding songs mostly.
Born Barry Alan Pincus in 1943 and raised by his single mother Edna Manilow, in Brooklyn, Manilow knew early on his first love was music. His second love was his high school sweetheart Susan Deixler. I was in love with Susan, says Manilow of the woman he married after graduating high school, I just was not ready for marriage. The star maintains he wasnt struggling with his sexuality at the time of their one-year matrimony. I was out making music every night, sowing my wild oats I was too young. I wasnt ready to settle down.

And here I thought his early days singing with Bette Midler in gay bathhouses was because of equal opportunity employment!
First clue: Bette Midler was bff during the disco years.
(or is it ‘bestie’ now? Too old to keep up)
I think the general public knew Barry was a fruit before he did. Did he boink Richard Simmons or something to finally coax himself out of the closet?
