I believe that the CIA has been filled with islamists and America haters these last 8 yrs so little would shock me.
Assad was aiding and assisting al Qaeda along its rat lines into Iraq to kill Americans and Iraqis throughout that involvement. He had deep ties with them. His attacks on his people and the Civil War that ensued opened the door for them to turn on him.
