Applied to downsizing of the military in the 80s/90s. Dunno if it was used exclusively for the military - by the time it happened to my Mom in ‘93 from her civvy employer she was calling it ‘getting cut.’

I was RIF’d in early ‘90. Fortunate to have served mostly under Reagan.

I left the USAF after 4 years with an Honorable Discharge. My CIC was Eisenhower and our flag had 48 stars. Served in AK before it acquired statehood. KFC and McDonald were still unknown.
