Pakistan was carved out of India, so a lot of commonality exists.

I worked for a Pakistani many years ago, and was told that Patel was as common there as Smith was here.

Me too. Patel is not a Muslim name, usually Hindu background. Very common name.

Maybe this person is a convert, or his father was etc...
