Not just in the NYC area. Upstate it’s more about taxes than prices though. In my neck of the woods, prop taxes on a $150,000 to $200,000 home can run 5 to 10 grand. Who the heck wants to pay that?!

What also might be accelerating the exodus: there’s a rumor that the state legislature plans on enacting an “exit tax” on fleeing NYS homeowners who sell up. Can’t make ‘em stay? Make ‘em pay to leave.

I drove thru NYC on the way to Boston a couple of years ago.

On one of the bridges I noticed a sign stating no picture taking allowed.

I can post it if you’d like.

In Florida I can drive with a gun in one hand and a cell phone in the other at 75 mph without worrying about getting pulled over.

As human beings, we can do a lot of things. That doesn't mean we do them. Mostly because some things are either buck f'n stupid, against the law, or else endanger one's own life, or the life of innocent folk. At the end of yours, you will be held responsible for the fatal decisions you make now. Go take a class in responsible gun ownership. Before it's too late.

I hear you, as we are currently living through it right now. Our oldest is on the verge of college graduation next year, and has a girl he wants to marry.

But we’ve advised him to avoid attempting to live in this area — he can’t afford it, and he won’t be able to afford it unless his father and I both kick the bucket. Heck, kearnyirish, if hubby and I had to try to buy our own house again now, at these prices and at this tax rate, I’m not so sure we could do it.

And you’re right: we never do really own our own homes; we merely rent them from the government. You can’t imagine the strange looks I get when I say that out loud in public. LOL

I have no idea who will buy our house one day, but if it’s a young couple expecting their first child like we were, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that Mom and Dad are footing a huge hunk of the bill. The house is perfect for a growing family, but the cost...it’s no wonder the young ones are leaving in droves.

Regards,

Taxes in my town (between Newark & Jersey City, NJ - not a great area) average over $9K - nobody pays as low as $5K.

It drives the prices down; people don’t want to buy a $800/month IOU just in property taxes. 75% goes right to the public schools...

You can certainly find a buyer if the location is good; teachers, cops, and such will buy because they have high salaries, lifetime employment, and pensions that will allow them to remain in them even when they retire. Private sector workers just can’t do that anymore.

I’d still buy my home because of proximity to our jobs and families (for my wife and myself both); I just don’t have any illusions about how this works. We bought before the bubble, though; I would never buy it at what these homes sell for now (even with their higher taxes). Many are being converted o multi-family homes, and because Americans have few children you end up with a situation where parking becomes a nightmare - 90%+ of the residents have a car (instead of the more traditional balance which included more children and very old people).

The 'rent' is renamed Property Taxes.
