Marvel VP of Sales blames women and diversity for sales slump
Gizmodo ^

Marvel Comics aren’t doing well. Sales have declined, even as Marvel has pushed out every major event and crossover it can over the past two years. In a recent interview during the Marvel Retailer Summit, Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel decided to ignore all the problems and criticism in order to place the blame on diversity.

What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there. That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales. We saw the sales of any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up against.

So then, the market doesn’t support women action heroes???

In spite of them pushing same, the audience just isn’t interested??? Now what???

They rejected the decades of history that made their characters great by tearing down the male characters and turning them female. They failed to understand what made the characters appealing to begin with and most of all, they failed to understand their audience is MALE not FEMALE so of course sales declined. The primarily White audience does not want to see all the main characters turned black and hispanic as well. It’s simple marketing and they went for social experimentation.

As a female fan of both Marvel and DC during the 60’s, I always preferred Marvel because the Superheroes were so much more “Heroic” and unabashedly VIRILE.

The main buyers of comics are white males. The industry alienates them at their own peril.

Yet, Doctor Who is considering a woman to play the role of the next doctor.

Don't mind female superheroes....when the heroes turn homosexual is when the game is over.

Marvel should look at Target, ESPN and others who've valued "diversity".

I remember the “Earn Prizes and Cash” ads in the middle or back of the comic books back in the 1970s. Also the ads for Sea Monkeys and Star Trek or Star Wars gear and other important kid equipment back then, lol.

Some just will never get it. Like many, I don’t pay any attention to the WNBA. Women on the ice skating circuit make more than men. Parity for parity’s sake achieves neither parity nor success.

Like, uh, duuuuuh!

Bet not many liked that the core characters were being turned homo, either.

Double down. All new characters will be minority lesbians. "We'll make them like it!"

I’m interested in your opinion. So, as a woman, you’re not really looking to see a portrayal of women super heroes. You want to see heroic male, and as you say, virile, action heroes.

And, the action heroes are entertainment above all, aren’t they? And not really something which we should make some sociological or political statement about?

1) Consumers don't want women superheroes.
2) Consumers don't want homo superheroes.
3) Consumers don't want liberal superheroes.

Therefore, consumers don't want your crappy comics.

And I didn't even get an MBA from Wharton.

The internet provided young people with a forum to exchange with one another and they discovered their values were much different from those of older cosmopolitan business executives who long had been simply dictating to younger consumers.

the comic industry has long been a Preserve of social justice Warrior thinkers.

that’s been true for 30 or more years.
