Ummm...they didn’t have a choice.
A few years ago the government in Viet Nam tried to substitute new coins for the lesser denomination notes. Viet Nam had not used coins for many years. The new coins were a brass colored alloy and actually looked pretty good. The problem for them was that women carried most of the money as they did all the household shopping. Women, in VN for the most part do not use purses. A woman goes to market, she has her market basket in one hand and her money in the other hand. The coins got left at home where they were collected until they were all put n a bag and swapped for notes. By the time I went back again the coins had disappeared. I have probably more of those coins than almost all Vietnamese now.
