Part of Interstate 85 collapsed north of downtown Atlanta Thursday night after a massive fire broke out under the busy highway during afternoon rush hour traffic.
The fire broke out at around 6 p.m. Atlanta fire officials told Fox 5 the blaze caught giant spools of plastic utility conduits which were being stored under the overpass.
No injuries to motorists or firefighters were reported. Georgia State Patrol Capt. Mark Perry told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that terrorism is not suspected.
Prior to the collapse, structural engineers told FOX 5 they were worried about fire melting the metal under the bridge. Witnesses say troopers told motorists to turn around on the bridge because they were concerned about its integrity.
The bridge collapsed at around 7 p.m. Foam trucks were eventually brought up from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to smother the remaining fire.

Because fire NEVER melts steel...not in all of history! ....at least that is what "The View" star, Rosie O'Doughnut told me.
Forcing all traffic onto 285 now. My miserable commute home each day just became an impossible hell. Already takes me 2 hours to get home on an average day and this will add at least 1 hour and probably more.

Waffles never did it for me, I prefer 3-4 layers of butter soaked pancakes.
The point actually isn’t that steel melts - which it will - but that it weakens in the transition to that melting point. Weakening is all that’s needed to collapse.
Despite what Rosie o’Donut thinks.
And God reaches out a finger and dispels another leftist trope: “Jet fuel can’t melt steel beams”
It’s been a bad week for the left.
Funny thing is...this won’t affect Atlanta traffic at all.
It’s ALWAYS a mess.
;-)
Depending on your job, you might be able to switch to a “4-10” work schedule and/or stay at a motel a few days a week.
I left Houston 12 years ago b/c you get trapped in cities when something happens to a freeway.
When Hurricane Rita passed by Houston, people panicked and all avenues out were so congested people were stuck on the freeways for many many hours. Made me think.
I left in 2005 and went full blown rural. I make less money, but my stress level is nil and we live pretty well. Grow veggies, fruits and have chickens. Cities are death traps!
“Its a convenient location.”

EXACTLY. Convenience and safety typically are mutually exclusive.
High concentration of Waffle Houses in and around Atlanta. It truly is a sight to behold. You do not have Waffle Houses in New York City. But if there were, I would definitely go to Waffle House more often.
I’m guessing this is NOT going to be good for Opening Day at the Braves’ new ballpark.
A very similar fire last summer (welder on a construction crew set fire to PVC pipes stacked at the site) came within 5 minutes of taking down the Liberty Bridge in Pittsburgh.
In more ways than one...

Are you on the FR Waffle House ping list? I can’t recall who runs it, but there is one. Not high volume.
“Detroit burner.”
I of course missed that last thread.
Brilliant moderation on that one.
South bound will have to be torn down and replaced as well.
