A suspected burglar was killed early this morning when a 79-year-old man shot him during a home invasion in eastern Jefferson County.

One of the burglars returned fire and struck the homeowner in the ankle, but he is expected to be OK. Authorities have not identified the dead man.

The ordeal began about 1:15 a.m. at a home on Ormond Drive in Center Point.

Jefferson County sheriff's Chief Deputy Randy Christian said deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress at the home. They arrived to find the elderly homeowner sitting on the front porch of the home.

He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Inside the home deputies found the adult male suspect suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The homeowner had been asleep when he was awakened by a noise from his basement, Christian said. Two suspects had forced open a basement window and entered the house.

The suspects continued upstairs and confronted the victim who was still in his bed. One of the suspects ordered him not to move. The victim then grabbed a gun that he kept by his bed and began firing at the suspects.

One suspect fell and the other fled. The victim chased the fleeing suspect out of the house. As the suspect ran across the yard he fired a shot that struck the victim in the leg. He then got into a waiting vehicle driven by a third suspect and fled the scene.

The homeowner was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Christian said the name of the dead man is being withheld pending notification of his family. The investigation is ongoing.

I guess the homeowner told the cops who put it in the report which the reporters read. Like you said don’t tell potential thieves...

Don’t break in the home of an old guy. He might not be able
to whip your butt; but he can for sure SHOOT your butt.

Most of them are old military and their AIM is still sharp
after many years. My aim isn’t great; but I’ve still got
five chances with my Smith & Wesson (self-aiming) revolver
after I fire that first shot.

Well, at least he isn’t wearing a pink “pussy” hat and a
BLM crybaby sign. Plus, he’s probably older now with less
patience.

One of my house guns is a 38 Special revolver on the nightstand. First round is a shot cartridge, the rest hollow-points. My rationale is that at close range, the shot is as good as a solid ball. At longer household ranges, the shot makes the guy hop around, yelling "Ow! Ow! Ow!" and gives me time to redirect the ball rounds.

That’s the law here in California, a stupid law. Since I have grandchildren around, I have to keep them locked up. I have gun safes that I can quickly open, but it does lose precious seconds if a situation like this happens. Either you break the law, or risk your life.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That law and other unconstitutional “laws” in California is why many people choose to live elsewhere. If you lock your bedroom door so children cannot get to the gun, you don’t have to put it where it can’t be easily reached. And of course deciding whether to break the law or risk your life is a no brainer.

Not good enough in California. Law specifically says the gun must be in a locked container or have a locking device (trigger lock or cable), both DOJ-approved. You can't just lock the bedroom door. If a minor gets ahold of it you can be charged with a misdemeanor or felony depending on circumstances. Sucks.

Always conforming one’s behavior to what the law specifically says can be the cause of serious injury and/or death. I would never place my potentially life-saving firearm under lock and key, no matter what the law says.

“PUT GUNS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!”

They are long gone.

When they were around, I showed them my guns, let them handle them to remove the mystique, AND kept them out of reach. Later on, after telling them the rules of safe handling, I took them in the back yard and shot a can of tomatoes with a 22 hollow point - goo flew all over the place. Told them that’s what a bullet does to a human. BIG impression.

I told them to call the bullet back into the gun and was told that was stupid, it couldn’t be done. I said “Exactly, as the pleas/apologies in the would would not undo that shot and to keep that in mind.

Never had a problem.

Our “kid” is fifty-one years old. However, we are subject
to infrequent, unexpected visits from sister-in-law &
brother-in-law’s numerous grandkids.

Fang was forgetful about the loaded gun in his desk drawer.
After the last time they visited a few years ago, I asked
him about his guns. - Oops! It clean slipped his mind! I
scared him & I meant to scare him.

He keeps his shotgun beside the front door (loaded), but he
is insistent on having it there in order to murder the
numerous squirrels that steal his pears off the trees down
in front. - I just try to remember to remove the shotgun
when any of the distant kin bring their kids to visit.
(Very rarely.) Fang is hardheaded and it puzzles me. His
grandparents had a very tragic situation with a loaded gun
that his grandfather kept on a high closet shelf. Fang
comes by the obstinate stubborn attitude honest. :o(

Since he was dead, technically he wasn’t suffering any more.
