I had a good friend from high school who eventually married a woman who was not content to have a bachelor's degree from a mountain west university. He struggled as a criminal defense lawyer (focusing on public defense and defending those who could not raise money themselves), and tried to raise their small family on his relatively meager income.

His wife became disenchanted with being primarily a stay-at-home mom, and decided to pursue a Master's degree in Poetry...at Sarah Lawrence College. I'm sure that my friend supported his wife, reluctantly, in her endeavor. It likely cost them a small fortune to send her there.

I'm not sure what happened during her studies, but she eventually decided to leave her Mormon religion and became a Quaker. She and my friend divorced, and he largely raised his children alone. I'm not sure if Hallmark ever hired her to write cards for them.

That poor guy. Lots of that happened during the early days of the women's movement.

Wendy Davis, who ran for TX governor in the last round, did pretty much the same thing. She waited until after she had her law degree to divorce her husband. Sticking him with the college debt.
