Cyber Firm at Center of Russian Hacking Charges Misread Data
VOA ^ | 3/21/17 | Pete Cobus

WASHINGTON —

An influential British think tank and Ukraine’s military are disputing a report that the U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has used to buttress its claims of Russian hacking in the presidential election.

The CrowdStrike report, released in December, asserted that Russians hacked into a Ukrainian artillery app, resulting in heavy losses of howitzers in Ukraine’s war with Russian-backed separatists.

But the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) told VOA that CrowdStrike erroneously used IISS data as proof of the intrusion. IISS disavowed any connection to the CrowdStrike report. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense also has claimed combat losses and hacking never happened.

The challenges to CrowdStrike’s credibility are significant because the firm was the first to link last year’s hacks of Democratic Party computers to Russian actors, and because CrowdStrike co-founder Dimiti Alperovitch has trumpeted its Ukraine report as more evidence of Russian election tampering.

CrowdStrike didn’t just “misread”. Take a look, they’ve got multiple g-men on their board.

Crowdstrike is also the firm the DNC used to ‘investigate’ the DNC email leaks, and before that the Bernie Sanders campaign accessing Clinton voter data scandal.

because of which, the DNC refused the FBI access to their server....according to the FBI. The DNC says the FBI never asked.

Big media is censoring this story. VOA is certainly not “alt right” and they have easily gathered all the facts.

ROTFL! This is making me chuckle quite a bit.

In Cyberspace, it is hard to prove things without having untamperable logs from all the right places.

I tend to agree, but this Russian collusion stuff isn't going away on its own...it needs to be deconstructed piece by piece.

Reverse the parties involved, put Clinton as president, and there would be dozens of indictments being handed down as we speak, including for treason. And the outraged media would be heralding it all on the front pages, instead of hiding and lying about it, as they are now.

The DNC refused to allow the government to investigate. The government relied on the claims of the DNC’s investigator, Crowdstrike Inc.

Crowdstrike’s owner, Alperovitch, claims that Russia hacked the DNC email system. Alperovitch claims malware used to breach the DNC email system was previously used by Russia to attack Ukrainian troops. This forms the basis of his claim that Russia hacked the DNC.

Alperovitch’s claim that Russia used this software to attack Ukrainian troops is partly based on the claims of a Russian blogger. The Russian blogger claims that Ukrainian military units were targeted via malware inserted onto Ukrainian tablet computers, the malware provided to Russia the location of Ukrainian troops, resulting in destruction of Ukrainian howitzers. To support the claim the blogger cites a 2016 International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) report of a sharp reduction of Ukrainian D-30 howitzers between 2013 and 2015.

//

One of the IISS researchers who produced the data said that while the think tank had dramatically lowered its estimates of Ukrainian artillery assets and howitzers in 2013, it did so as part of a “reassessment” and reallocation of units to airborne forces.

“No, we have never attributed this reduction to combat losses,” the IISS researcher said, explaining that most of the reallocation occurred prior to the two-year period that CrowdStrike cites in its report.

“The vast majority of the reduction actually occurs ... before Crimea/Donbass,” he added, referring to the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The malware has been available for years prior to the DNC breach.

Alperovitch told the PBS NewsHour: “And when you think about, well, who would be interested in targeting Ukraine artillerymen in eastern Ukraine? Who has interest in hacking the Democratic Party? [The] Russia government comes to mind

Why does Alperovitch think Russia has an interest in hacking the Democrat Party? What are Alperovitch’s biases?

Why does Alperovitch think Russia has an interest in hacking the Democrat Party?

Because that was the premise presented to him by the Clinton campaign.

As part of the investigation into the Sanders campaign gaining access to Clinton data in 2015, Crowdstrike did a forensic audit of the DNC server and no evidence of Russian hacking was uncovered.
