It may “work” in Austria but I don’t think their medical system works for profit. I refuse to be an organ donor until they decide to pay my children for the organs. Everyone in the process here gets paid big bucks for a transplant operation. The doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, hospital, etc. ALL make money off of the dead. Why shouldn’t my family, as well?
Perhaps we could both agree that the family receive a market price for organs but we must be careful not to encourage the death industry to harvest parts illegally because that would get us back close to forced organ extraction from live victims. However, if enough people failed to opt out of the Kennedy program, the supply of organs would so greatly increase that the price would inevitably be greatly reduced which would, in my view, be a very desirable result.
Meanwhile, if the best we can get is the (gasp!) Kennedy proposal, even without provision for profit, I am for it as would no doubt those whose lives will be saved and it still leaves you free to opt out until a profit can be made.
