In their zeal to be the next Woodward & Bernstein, they took the graft of information from “sources” they considered friendly and used their positions in the Free Press (free to lie and distort just as they are free to report the truth) as the willing accomplices to get a chit in the game.
What they did not count on was a Republican fighting back using the identical tactics they themselves employed.
