Because Mattis is great on a tactical level, and he’s nothing special on the strategic policy level.
For example, he supports overthrowing Assad, a Palestinian state, and other undesired things. That’s why he has no problem with her.
His talk misleads many.
Because she’s female and Mattis, like all of Trump’s generals, is more Establishment than we want to admit.

I remember her role in the Egyptian tragedy. She has no place in a government I voted for. Sickening. And Mattis isn’t stupid kids. He knows who she is. Draw you’re conclusions.

I remember the turmoil in Egypt and Anne Patterson’s very active roll in backing the Islamists. She left Egypt not too long after the Military took over and was practically persona non grata. She was reviled by the non Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators and would likely have been expelled by the Military if she had stayed IMO. This is a really bad choice and seems to show the power the Muslim Brotherhood still has in the US government.

I suspect that Anne Patterson is simply a professional bureaucrat who has no principled opinions that premise her actions; she simply rubber stamps and executes the plans and script given to her by whoever her boss is at the time. When Egypt went down she was Obama’s lackey there...
