President Trump may urge lawmakers to pass a compromise immigration reform bill during his speech to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, a senior administration official told television network anchors who met with the president.
Trump believes a major immigration bill is necessary but would require "a softening on both sides. There's got to be a coming together," the official said, according to CNN.
Trump envisions a proposal that would allow some undocumented immigrants live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation, but would stop short of offering them a pathway to citizenship.
Such a move would be a departure from the hardline stance on illegal immigration Trump has taken thus far in his presidency.

I am flexible to the point that if you can PROVE that you were carried in here as a babe in arms, and have no connection to nor memory of the country your parents brought you from, we can cut you a break.
That’s about it for me.
Well, if THE HILL says so, on the word of an unnamed senior official, Shirley it must be so!
< sarcasm tag may be needed? >
Most of us would be fine with some being allowed to remain but no citizenship.

No, we would not.
FAKE news
The biggest mistake Trump could make would be to try to compromise on immigration at this point.
The left will hate him no matter what he does, if he loses the right... he will go down in flames fast.
That being said... I don’t think that’s going to happen and this is all “fake news”
Fake news.
“...a senior administration official told television network anchors who met with the president.”
This is coming to us from a Hill reporter who heard it from a CNN anchor who got it from an administration official.
Let’s play telephone.
Why should the illegal aliens be put at the head of the line when it comes to staying and working here, the object of their crimes. At any one time there are 4 million intending immigrants waiting their turn overseas to enter. The completed all the paperwork, had the background checks, and physicals. Is it fair to them to have the illegal aliens jump the line.
Being allowed to stay and work here is amnesty. A path to citizenship is just the cherry on top. Green card holders have all the rights and benefits of citizenship save the right to vote (legally). Let's hope Trump doesn't go wobbly.
I recognize the need for ag workers. That has been going on for decades and we either allow the ones employed to stay and learn English, no welfare, no EIC, no healthcare (MUST BE PAID BY EMPLOYETR) or we will have to let others in for it. Either way there is no path to citizenship. There should be no one who is taking a job from an American (i.e. construction worker)
If they have committed identity theft that should not be grounds to stay. I’ve seen what happens to someone who has retired and then had their SS cut because someone was working and using their SS number. I’ve also seen people who have had their credit destroyed.
I don’t think everyone should be allowed to stay, just the ag workers. Without that you will never get the rest of the bill passed. I have no connection to the farms, but I do know that it’s work that has been done by migrants for decades.
Sure let’s pass a bill that says non criminal aliens can stay...Now go find me one......
This was what got Trump elected.
If he goes wobbly, he greatly undermines his support among the citizens.
He has none among the political class.
That’s the point. Art of the deal
Let’s wait until we see what happens. The press uses these “rumors” to divide the conservative base. To make it look like Trump is betraying the Republican voters. Or that his agenda isn’t going to make it through Congress. Its a tactic to demoralize us. Let’s see what happens. I don’t believe any of these types of BS stories from The Hill.
This is what I feared from his recent interview stressing how he only wanted the “bad dudes” out.
The Kushner/Priebusification of the administration seems to be on the ascendency.
There is absolutely no need to compromise on immigration—all that needs to be done is enforcement of the law.
If illegals are allowed to stay here legally, but just short of citizenship, the next move will be to give them citizenship. Guaranteed to happen.
If, and I say if, this trial balloon is acted upon, Trump will have become no better on the issue than Little Marco.
He’s keeping these people out because he is trying to figure out how to cull the good from the bad. The bad kill Americans with no idea who they are or what they believe and have a right to think. That violates our Constitution. If you don’t play by the rules, you shouldn’t be on the field.

Agreed—if Trump goes pro-amnesty the game is over. They will be made into voters and we’ll turn irredeemably left as a country.
Ann Coulter is right, this is the one issue that is critical right now—and without it our country is lost.
Yowsers—this from an official spokesperson:
I do know that the president has been very clear in his process that the immigration system is broken and needs massive reform and hes made it clear that he is open to discussions on that moving forward.
Trump completely rolling over with “comprehensive immigration reform”?
I haven’t taken grief for supporting him nearly daily for over a year to have him go all Rubio on immigration!
Have we just been sold out?
