I read comments from people on this board who were disappointed in GHWB abandoning conservatism, so why did they vote for his son?

I think many people were willing to vote for George W. Bush based on his own track record as governor of Texas, rather than assume that his pedigree would be inescapable. For his first term in office, at least, they appeared to have been correct.

Also, by the end of the Clinton years, GHWB was still seen as a weak leader due to the tax increase thing, but his image had been somewhat rehabilitated in comparison with Bill Clinton. Open border issues were just beginning to appear on the political radar for most voters - not truly influential in 2000.
