They didn’t have much of a defense lawyer, to allow for this sentence.
I remember back in the 1960s when motorcycle gangs used to fly the Nazi flag, wear German helmets and metals. Very offensive but no one ever went to prison for doing so.
Then in the late 1960s, leftists began to shove the Viet Cong flag in everyone’s face. Again no one ever went to prison for doing so.
So now flying the Confederate battle flag can get you prison time? Something is wrong here.

We’ve got young blacks actually getting physical with whites — real hate crimes — and nothing happens to them. This is worse than what these two did.
There is no justice with our sorry ass courts now. Liberal judges (they’re lawyers) have ruined our justice system. They’re destroying our nation.
I certainly don’t believe the witnesses either. My guess is all of them were black. As we see everyday, so many blacks are just totally morally void. Their violent crime rate is disproportionate to any race in the nation.
I don’t approve of the behavior of the two but they should have been fined $1000 and put on probation.

But Georgia does not have a hate crime statute.
Sounds possible that the racism wasn’t necessarily all on the side of defendants.

Racist trash but 35 years seems excessive, even combined and even with probation.
There also seems to be a media implication that the perps had specifically targeted the black boy’s birthday party. In fact they went on a tear through the whole county and were being drive-by @ssholes to any groups of blacks they encountered. The gun charges seem to stem from an earlier encounter where they walked up to a car carrying a weapon.
One thing that’s odd is that in the video there are police officers present when the pickups make their pass by the birthday party. Did the situation last long enough that the police had time to respond to a call? Or were they already there in anticipation? Was there a route that had been announced beforehand? Had this group followed this route before? Just seems odd.

At first I thought it was a bit harsh for the crime but on further thought - if people are that ignorant, stupid and mean, there’s no punishment that will prevent them from screwing with others - until someone decides it’s time to break out the Colt.
