Yup. Times were different in NOLA back then. Out on Canal Street past the cemetery going towards Lake Pontchartrain there was a place named L’Enfants that was basically a drive in bar/parking lot. Multiple cars parked and servers took your order and delivered your drinks to you. People would leave there and go drag race on the not yet completed I-10 bypass out towards Metarie. Not that I ever did that. ;-)

Do you remember Nick's on Tulane?

Barnlike structure with the name emblazoned on the side:

"Nicholas Castrogiovanni, Fancy Mixed Drinks"

They stopped serving beer after 4PM - cocktails only.
