Having said that, I still feel obliged to cut him a little slack because of how sexual abuse can warp the mind of an abused child. Again, talking from experience.

Or maybe less cutting him slack, and more feeling very sorry for him because of what that did to him. I can certainly see why he could come to believe that, at least if I remember his biography correctly.

Even if it’s horrible.
