I’m surprised no one has mentioned the apparent correlation with the Great Depression.

When our prosperity was dealt a debilitating blow, We the People of the first world responded. When hard times come, you know, it’s better if we don’t have too many mouths to feed.

Then, after WW2 brought recovery, “The Greatest Generation” decided more stuff felt better than more kids. And without a house full of rug rats, Mom was free to go out and make more money to get more stuff (”for the children” of course).

Meanwhile denominations, doing what they do best, simply reacted by saying what their members (and prospects) wanted to hear.

And here we remain today, materialists to our core.
