I completely agree. I grew up saying “I could care less” (in a sarcastic/sneering tone). I never heard of “I couldn’t care less” until I was an adult and moved back east. To this day, “I couldn’t care less” sounds stilted.

Yep, the sarcastic/sneering tone defines it. Just like saying, "Fat chance" or "Yeah, right" when you really don't mean it.
