I don’t get it. Russia and Putin say they respect national sovereignty, except when they don’t. Taking over a nation or part of it by force is warlike act. Putin deserves to reap the punishments.

Also, let’s look at reality. Grenada and Panama, sovereign countries both.. I’m not looking at calling our actions wrong, just the interesting concept of sovereignty.

Yes, the Mao quote sums up the justification for Putin very well. It’s might makes right. And both Grenada and Panama involved outcomes that returned power to the people of those countries, not annexation by the USA. They also involved protecting US citizens. People living in Crimea were Ukrainian citizens, some of whom speak Russian. It’s not exactly the same, legally. It’s more like how the Sudeten Germans were used to justify the takeover of Czechoslovakia.

When you have a militaristic, expansionist world power, with sophisticated nuclear, chemical and biologic weapons program and the delivery systems for them, led by a former KGB bully boy who reigns unchecked, with a population that has always respected raw power rather than the discrete political touch, helped in his rule by what can only be described as a vast criminal enterprise, sitting on incredible amounts of natural resources, in a country that has often punished political failure with a bullet, that has an economic system teetering on collapse because of the low price of oil upon which their economy is based, where one Muslim terrorist organizations, the Chechnians are kept under control by allowing them semi-autonomy in exchange for them providing “soldiers” when Putin needs to go after other Muslims, that is not an opponent to be taken lightly.
