A meeting between congressional Hispanic Democrats and the Trump administration's top immigration enforcement officer was canceled abruptly Tuesday in the wake of national immigration raids that have roiled Latino leaders.
Thomas Homan, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Tuesday that he would not be attending the meeting, according to CHC aides.
CHC Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) and Homan had a phone call at 2 p.m. to discuss the cancellation. The CHC is expected to hold a press conference later Tuesday.
Homan's office said it had received too many requests to meet with members of Congress and proposed rescheduling the meeting with a larger, bipartisan group later this week.
CHC staff said a larger meeting was not a reasonable replacement for the canceled sit-down because it would shield Homan from directly facing members who represent the constituency most affected by ICE raids. "It's more of the same from the Trump administration," said an aide.
Hundreds of immigrants have been arrested in ICE raids in at least six states over the past week, in what the administration has called an effort to deport dangerous criminal aliens.
But Hispanic leaders have argued that large-scale raids are not targeted enforcement and unnecessarily round-up undocumented immigrants who are not dangerous criminals.
Reps. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.) had planned to attend the meeting.
ICE did not immediately return a request for comment.
I heard Conyers on the radio this morning. He sounds like he is just about ready to expire.
Deport all illegal aliens regardless of where they are from.

If your 'constituency' consists of REAL American citizens they should have no worries. OTOH, if they are not citizens and are here illegally - they shouldn't be your 'constituency' in the first place since they cannot vote (legally). . . . .

Any Congress person that makes such a statement should be immediately removed from office for Supporting Illegal Acts of Criminal Invaders. These Supposed Congresscritters are elected to REPRESENT American Citizens, NOT Illegal Border Jumpers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but illegal aliens are not a constituency. A “constituency” is comprised of the “voters” (citizens) within a a representative’s Congressional district. ICE does not deport citizens. Only illegal aliens.
“...not dangerous criminals...”??? Apparently, being a federal felon, lying about your social security number, illegally taking welfare of all sorts and illegally having your children waste taxpayer resources by attending public-funded schools isn’t being “dangerous”. They are a danger to our civil society which has a Rule of Law. What seditious losers.
