Four Republican senators have withdrawn their support for Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder after he admitted to hiring an undocumented immigrant as his housekeeper, Law Newz reported.
Per sources, Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Tim Scott, and Johnny Isakson have all said they will not support Puzder, a chief executive of Hardee's parent company, because of all the hiccups ahead of his confirmation hearing.
Puzder said in a statement Feb. 6 he and his wife had employed a housekeeper for three years but didn't know she was in the U.S. illegally.
"When I learned of her status, we immediately ended her employment and offered her assistance in getting legal status," he said. "We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California."

Then why did trump picked this guy if he’s pro amnesty? I’m glad he was caught out and he needs to go.
You ask. It’s not rocket science. Even if it’s through an agency, if they speak English with anything then the US accent, then you ask if they have a legal right to work in the United States and ask to show their documentation. He’s responsible for anybody that comes into his house. He would think he would want to make sure that his possessions and his children were not in danger.
He knew.
You can call the phone number on the green card, and give the identification number and name on the card and see if it is valid.
Right, a simple $50 background check would have found everything out. I do them all the time for my renters.
Actually ironically those four are doing the conservative thing on this issue. I can’t believe so many here or for hiring illegals and thento get the legal status
It sends a message that employers should discriminate against illegal aliens ? So he was wrong to hire her? Did the law allow him to ask her citizenship status?
A message these same 4 senators and every democrat is being a huge hypocrite about because they espouse the opposite on their own cities states and employers
Let’s hold everyone to the same standard
A standard the RINOs and democrats aren’t willing to uphold
When people come in to clean houses or be a housekeeper, they often are not considered ‘employees’ because they work on a piecemeal basis, and there are no benefits involved. Same thing with lawn care people.
I don’t know whether that’s the case here or not, but it often is. It does sound like this housekeeper was a full-time employee, though.
Well, he could have paid taxes while she was employed, not wait unail she was found out. I’m assuming we are talking about employer taxes.
We don’t need a Labor Department, just shut it down.
Maybe the Democrats will come away with this one scalp from President Trump’s cabinet confirmation process...
I get the feeling some Rs are looking for a Trump scalp, too, in an attempt to show him that they're not powerless against him or something along those lines.
No, he knew she was an illegal alien or he would have been paying the taxes all along and not paying her under the table.
*********
This is one likely explanation.
If she was indeed his employee, how could he NOT have been withholding and depositing employment taxes?
Only possible “out” for him is that she was an independent contractor, not an employee (1099 services instead of W2 earnings). But that is not likely to hold up under the common IRS tests used to decide between employee/contractor. It is often a shady situation to try it. If he hired a service company that employed its own employees to provide the housekeeping service, he might have a stronger argument. I doubt that is what happened here.
If he had been withholding her employee taxes and reporting her labor on forms properly all along, and she was then later discovered to have provided him with fraudulent docs, he might have a sympathetic case. The fact that he sent in taxes AFTER 3 yrs when he supposedly discovered she was an illegal is by itself very suspicious.
but why would Tim Scott jump on the loser train?
Our Country is FINALLY taking illegal aliens seriously and we have an idiot appointee who hired an illegal alien? No thanks. Get someone better. Tim Scott is 100 percent correct on this for that reason.
Walking down memory lane. Timothy Geithner was confirmed as Obama’s Secretary of the Treasury in 2009 even though he admitted he failed to pay $70,000 in federal income taxes. The Secretary of the Treasury oversees the IRS. Ten Republicans joined the Democrats in voting for the confessed tax evader.
Once again hypocrisy runs deep in DC.
The problem is that he didn't want her expelled, but tried to make her legal.
Fire his @ss. He will only do harm to Trump and the US.
“Illegal lover.”
He isn’t on our side if he’d even consider helping an invader become legal.
That is the winning statement right there. Down with this liberal creep. Trump made a huge error with this felon (should be anyway).
How do you verify someone’s legal status for employment?
You can’t...that’s the trick folks.
If they have papers, you accept them. If you have someone that you suspect might not be a citizen, you cannot treat them different or do additional research into their background or you will face an EEOC violation.
And THAT is the situation we are in, “Murica!
Yeah but once he said he’d help get her citizenship.....all that benefit of the doubt went out the window never to return.
Me either.
Although there aren’t that many Hardees around here anymore.
We used to have lots of them.
They were not your employees.
