Hi Ray76, "Turbulent, 'non-laminar flow point' causing a notable 'bump' in Upper Main Spillway high volume waterflow" - There has been discussion going on in another engineering site concerning the inlet turbulence to the main spillway (i.e. scouring of the inlet or simple non-laminar inlet flow discussion).
What was missed was in their photo was the discovery of the notable "Turbulent Crest" in the flow some couple of hundred feet behind the concrete weir in the main spillway.
note: "Turbulent Cresting" requires a convergence of directed flow -or- in rivers, usually from a non-laminar base (such as a subsurface body). In addition there is a symmetrical presence of spray water on the far containment wall - which is centered at this focus "cresting point"...
It would be best if this powerful turbulent point (non-laminar flow) is simply from an asymmetric inflow condition (circled). I don't have a peak height/width of this turbulent crest zone at the moment. Note: this shot has been "image sharpened" via processing software for zoom & contrast clarity (compare to full size view in your original post).

Very interesting. Does this thing showing in the water above the spillway pose a some kind of unresolvable danger of blockage to the outflow onto the spillway?

Did debris fall into the dam or is the weir/spillway breaking apart on the dam side?

If that is a side structure realigned by the flow above the throat of the outlet, in your post, we have a bad bad problem.

I hate to sound like that repeating wizarding professor, but, “We may have to close Hogwarts.”

Comment at # 1,319 then see Photos at # 1,320 # 1,326 .

And other comments as well.

Thanks, EarthResearcher333 .

The area behind the gate is irregular.

The turbulence might be caused by water flowing over the retaining wall near the gate.

There is a small berm or ledge atop part of the retaining wall and appears to be what is sticking out of the water in the circled area of the photo in #1320

>>Triangular shaped Berm at Inlet to Main Spillway Discussion<<

This image shows a lower water view of the front of the Main Spillway Weir.

You can see the vegetation (bush/tree) locations. The dark color is from a grassy covering. What is also of note is the wood debris laying on top of the other side inlet above the concrete. This debris matches the images that another engineering forum was debating as to what the material was (i.e. was it scoured erosion coloration, etc). This material was partially submerged from the inlet flow hydraulics. Yet it found an "eddy" where the material clustered together from the turbulent inflow.

The good news is that the berm itself does not seem to have experienced much scouring - other than the small surface erosion to aggregate material.
