Longer prison sentences will probably reduce the rates of shooting on Chicago streets but not enough to be apparent in the ongoing statistics. It will not deter those not in prison but will dissuade those in prison from shooting people while they are in prison.
Instead, those now in prison will stay busy knifing each other rather than shooting each other. As stated elsewhere, “It’s a heart problem, not a gun problem.”
