I was just cruising around FR and this sentence jumped out at me——and I thought it was a bird thread.

Needless to say I was a bit surprised.:-)

You are correct about the first version. But a lot of first generation planes are that way. The Corsair, of WWII fame, killed so many pilots (before they worked out the issues) that they were called "the widow maker."

The current version is well loved and very reliable. It has shown to be able to take a lot of hits and keep flying.
