All they have are words, which is why fake news can be so dangerous.
The only defense is a good, sound education in the English language (kind'a like studying where and why a comma would be placed in the second amendment) and the curiosity and ability to tap a few computer keys to research a matter.

One of my newest weapons in the War Against Fake News:
If someone challenges you with a news article, just post that back in their face, with the disclaimer "I'm not interested in giving up my personal information for #FakeNews".
It is to laugh. I'm going to get one for the NY Times, too. 😀
